The South Australian Primary Schools Amateur Sports Association (SAPSASA) was founded in 1912 to co-ordinate sporting programs among schools.

It provides avenues for the development of primary age students who show ability in sports. SAPSASA sport is characterized by fun, enjoyment, participation, competition, challenge, character development and social interaction.

The state is divided into 38 SAPSASA districts, 18 metropolitan and 20 country. Penola Primary School is one of the 15 schools in the Mid South East District which participates in Swimming, Softball, Cross Country, Football, Netball, Golf, Basketball, Hockey, Soccer, Athletics, Tennis and Cricket.

Penola Primary School students have excelled in SAPSASA sports over many years and it boasts several students who have gone on to represent South Australia in national carnivals.
